Arima Onsen access from Osaka / Kyoto station

Onsen is one of the most popular reasons to visit Japan.

Arima Onsen, the most famous onsen in Kobe, is a wonderful destination if you are staying in Osaka or Kyoto Area.

As I was born in Kobe and have been to Arima Onsen many times, I would like to share the easiest access from Osaka or Kyoto Station.

My profile is right here so if you are interested in who is writing this article, please check my profile out.

Pattern 1 Osaka to Arima Onsen

To make the explanation easier, I made the map using the screenshot from Google Maps.

If you are heading to Arima Onsen from Osaka station, the route will be as below.

1. Osaka Station to Sannomiya Station (Train)

This isn't a difficult job.

Go to the JR Osaka station and get on Shinkaisoku (Rapid Train) heading for Sannomiya.

JR's website here shows you a more detailed explanation about how to get on the train, but you can also ask about the train staff as well.

Osaka station is quite complicated so asking him to train staff will save you time.

If you are with a Japan Rail pass, this is the chance to utilize the ticket.

If you're not sure about what I'm talking about please refer to the article All you need to know about Japan rail pass ticket to save you time and money during your trip to Japan.

2.Sannomiya Station to Arima Onsen Station (Train)

When you arrive at JR Sannomiya Station, you want to change the line to the Kobe-city subway (神戸市営地下鉄).

If you are having trouble finding the subway entrance, it is always important to ask the train staff how to reach to the city subway and tell them that you want to go to Arima Onsen.

First, you will get on Tanigami-Line (谷上線) and get off at Tanigami Station.

When you get off at Tanigami station, you'll see loads of people walking to another platform.

Since this station is almost only for exchanging the line for Arima Onsen if you follow as others do you'll be fine.

To sum up, the route will be

  • Osaka - Sannomiya (approx. 30min)
  • Sannomiya - Tanigami (approx. 15min)
  • Tanigami - Arimaonsenguchi  (approx. 10min)

Your whole journey is about an hour from Osaka.

Pattern 2 Kyoto to Arima Onsen

Alike the road from Osaka, taking Japan Railway (JR) is the easiest way to get to Sannomiya station

1. Kyoto Station to Sannomiya Station (Train)

First, take Shinkaisoku (Rapid Train) heading for Sannomiya from JR Kyoto station.

Of course, Kyoto station is JR line, you should use a Japan rail pass if you have it.

2. Sannomiya Station to Arima Onsen Station (Train)

This one is exactly the same as the exclamation previously so I will skip writing the same sentence again.

To sum up, the route will be

  • Kyoto - Sannomiya (approx. 60min)
  • Sannomiya - Tanigami  (approx. 15min)
  • Tanigami - Arimaonsenguchi  (approx. 10min)

Your whole journey is about an hour and a half from Kyoto.
